South Northamptonshire district makes up about half of our Western Policing Area, together with Daventry district. It is a large rural area which happily suffers from relatively low levels of crime.

However, its rural nature makes it vital that we work together with our partner agencies, including the voluntary sector, to keep the area safe and equally importantly to reduce the fear of crime. We are delighted to be involved in the Safe and Sound project.

Our part in the project

Northamptonshire Police Western Area has two Crime Reduction Officers, who work with householders, public bodies and the business to provide sound and impartial advice on crime prevention and security issues. This advice is given free of charge, and is considered to be an important part of our work.

Our ethos is strongly that Prevention is better than Cure.

Working with our partners as part of the Safe and Sound project, first of all we will be involved in training the volunteers working in the project. This will be in basic crime prevention.

As they make their local visits to potential clients, they will be able to spot instances where the householder's security could be enhanced, for example by the fitting of a modern lock or door chain.

Perhaps more importantly, they will be trained to notice where more general crime prevention advice would be appropriate for the client. This information will be relayed back to us with the client's consent.

We will then contact the client directly to arrange an appointment to visit the home and offer advice as required. By working together we can make a real difference to those members of our community who may need a little help to remain safe and independent.
